We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield. —George Orwell (1946) |

I don't think anybody blames the religion - but the point of it is that JWs like to say that if you're a Witness it was because "you were called or chosen by Jehovah" to be a Witness. They love to highlight how different they are than all other religions. They love to brag about the kind of peace and family happiness that only Jehovah's Witnesses have. They try to use distorted statistics to claim that problems among themselves are less than those of non-JWs. The fact is, from a born-in's perspective at least, - this kind of thing should never have happened among Jehovah's happy people. The video that the JWs have about the Bible changing people's lives - it's supposed to be a testimony of what happens to all JWs when they become a believer of the JW Bible's interpretations.
In the end - this shows that JWs - while definitely not responsible for this tragedy - are no different than any religion or even independent Christian or personal revelationist. There just is no power that transforms one's life from any external invisible source.

Are they really that bad???
by anonymous4 inhad a good look into the doctrine, beliefs and practices of jws and to be honest, i don't really see anything wrong with it at all.. it's biblical and i've had such an eye opener the past year or so reading some of their books and magazines .
is there really any real reasons why i shouldn't want to get involved further?
:-).

Aguest - I'm printing out your post and framing it. Then when my son reaches the 4th grade, I'm going to send it with him to his science class. The lecture for the class on that day will be: KIDS, THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T DO DRUGS.
Actually, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to request you make your post into some kind of mini-lecture, and if possible you could come to show and tell.
I think it will go something like this:

Did you play tackle football as a good little JW?
by JRK inin my town we did.
each congregation had its own "pick up" team.
we would get together and play on a chosen sunday after the meetings.

Good thread.
Tackle football was taboo off and on throughout the 80s and 90s in the US- then in the late 90s something seemed to happen in the congregations. Nobody really did anything sports-wise with their children. Every once in a while - you'd have a few put a game together - but nothing like the fun JW days of the 80s and early 90s. I remember when every other local need talk was about playing too competitively. There were smiles and snickers by a lot - and usually a wink or two by the elders participating themselves. Tackling would subside for a few weekends then - it would pick back up again until brother brags-he-is-good-as-a-pro gets his collar bone broken by brother really-should-play-on-varsity.
But the point is - we really would do things together as families. A lot of parents would truly spearhead activities to make up for all the stuff you'd be missing out on in school. IT was every weekend just about. In bethel we even had softball leagues - a lot of the guys would skip lunch once or twice a week to play. It was almost like intermural college - it was great. But then they clamped down. Now days local needs talks are about beating the flock for more money for the latest compliant wireless mic system.
In the congregations, families just got too busy, the mothers started to work more because the unedcuated fathers incomes were barely able to keep up with inflation. Today - I hear there is nothing going on. No picnics. No swimming parties. Nada. There actually was a nice basketball league going on that was put on by some elders the last couple years. But some other elders started complaining - and you know the rest of the story.
It's funny though, because at a recent circuit assembly the district overseer made an interesting comment. He told the witnesses that he'd been telling all his circuits this: That it's time to get back to the good old days. When we used to associate more socially with one another. When children would go to parties and play sports among themselves. When the organization was truly more family oriented. The audience roared in applause like I'd never heard before at any circuit assembly - even letting out some whoops.
I feel so bad for the kids being raised in the org today. At least I got to have a semblance of a normal childhood. But those days are over and it really is sad. I mean I look at the mormons and the JWs - both have wacked out doctrinal beliefs and I think the mormons beliefs are way beyond credulous in comparison to the WT. But if I had to choose between the two, I'd take the mormon life over the JW one any day. Seriously though, what the hell happened to the JWs in the last decade and a half?? Hell, if they don't want to bring back tackle football - just bring back football - just bring back picnics. For God's sake they should do something to prevent the kids from kiling themselves out of sheer boredom.

Taking blood automatically disassociates you?
by lostsheep82 ini don't get how you are disassociated if you take blood, if you are unrepentant according to the elders manual on pg 111. now do they have this same elders manual in bulgaria?.
also if you join a nonnuetral organization you dissasociate yourself automatically.
so i wonder if some poor janitor brother with his own business became an ngo with the un if he would have been cast out!

TD - what about someone, when asked by the elders about blood, says
"I don't mean to be antagonistic, but I just don't share my personal medical decisions with anyone who is not part of my team of doctors. I fully intend to exercise my hippa rights to medical privacy, and if any individual were to attempt to inquire of any medical treatment I may or may not have received, I would be left with no choice but to file suit against such a person. I don't mean to say that in a way that comes accross threatening, it's just that I must do all I can to ensure that my medical privacy rights are respected. However, you can rest assured that I have done absolutely nothing that would violate anything the Bible says about the medical use of blood. But now, I'm going to need to ask you to refrain from inquiring or discussing my private health matters any further. I cannot emphasize enough how serious of a legal matter it is that nothing involving my medical decisions be mentioned or discussed by anyone whatsoever."
